Ugly Betty's cancellation... good or bad for Scrubs?

ABC has today announced the cancellation of Ugly Betty following ailing ratings, and it will end once its current fourth season has ended.

Yes, that's sad and whatnot, but the big issue here is: What does this mean for Scrubs?! Stephen McPherson has, just has he has with Scrubs, spoken of his love and disappointment for Ugly Betty. But the love wasn't enough. And he culled it!

Sooo.... if he said the same things about Betty, does that mean his words on Scrubs are just as hopeless and meaningless? If that is the case, then there is only one response: O shit man wassup wiv dat?!

Though it could be taken another way. With one of their comedies cancelled, maybe they'll have more space for Scrubs? Ugly Betty has been airing at 10/9C on ABC on comedy Wednesdays, a day McPherson has stated is a possibility for Scrubs, though he said it would probably be at 9/8C. Still, it means there are two slots open on Wednesdays (UB is a one-hour show), which could mean that both Scrubs and Better off Ted could air back to back on Wednesdays. Perhaps McPherson has killed one show to save two? Let's hope, Maenads, let's hope.

#saveourscrubs day... Again. :D

Take two! To celebrate today's release of Our Dear Leaders (possibly the last episode of season 9 to be aired, as they haven't scheduled the other two to air- OH DEAR), we want you to tweet #saveourscrubs to save it. So do, please, because I believe you are nicer than Justin Bieber. Oh yes, I went there. We are BETTER than his fans!!

Choozday. Strike two!

On tubbltibbleday (Tuesday) 26th January, we will be trying to trend #saveourscrubs again! C'mon chiquitos!

So, in case you didn't understand that, here's a summary:

Tuesday 26th January 2009, tweet #saveourscrubs in attempt number two for trending!

Bueno? Kinder bueno!

Further proof that everything comes down to food. Not poo. Duh.

New day, new plan.

So... the twitter thing didn't go too well. It didn't trend. Having said that, it still was pretty successful! At one point there were bout three #saveourscrubs tweets a minute. But one kindo needs thirty for trending power...

Still, we did pretty well, and it showed that many people care enough to tweet for Scrubs' survival. And Bill Lawrence clearly caught wind of and acknowledged the campaign, tweeting
"Thanks to all the fans for your support of both #scrubs and #cougartown"

So that's good. :) It means he knows we care, and will be more likely to fight for the show.
Pick up yo optimism specs, fou, it be way too early to give up!

In the words of Klaxons: It's not over, it's not over yet.

Also, watch Scrubs today!! A ratings boost is imperative.

The SOS Unofficial Street Team.... And then some. :)

Hello SOSers!!

Today, I was doing some random SOS advertising, and I decided to give it a name.

STREETTEAMING!!

The idea is, in a nutshell, to get out on the street and advertise SOS! We are running seriously low on numbers at the moment, mainly due to the fact that enough of people just don't know about it.

Don't worry, the idea is not to get out on the street and accost and/or mug people until they agree to support the cause, but to get out and just get the message out, in blatant but polite ways.

Here's an example of what to do. Today I was in stationery shop, Ryman's, trying out some pens I never intended to buy. I, unthinkingly, started drawing a huge picture type thing advertising SOS. I now know that the next people to visit the pen section of Ryman's (which will be at least a couple of thousand every hour, it's an incredibly popular shop and is an especially large branch). It was simple and took no time, in fact it was hideous (see picture below), but it will get the message across and inform people of the Scrubs crisis.

Having done that, I thought it only necessary to advertise some more. Getting on the London tube, when I reached a couple of overground stations and my mobile phone had signal, I decided it was time for some shameless plugging. It was the 'rush-hour' (so everyone was silent and packed like sardines, so listening to anyone making noise to avoid maddening boredom). I got on the phone with my friend and had an incredibly loud conversation with my friend about SOS, and saw interest from many people. Oh yes, I am an educator!!

Now, the idea of the Unofficial SOS Street Team is to do similar things. Basically, do what you can to get members of the public informed about the campaign. Good idea? I think so! ;)

Oh, and I sent out my McPherson letter today. Isn't it pretty?

Only cost 90p to send first class across the Atlantic. How about that?!

PS My photos are stretched because photobucket is a total buttmunch. :)

My letter to Stephen McPherson, and more attempts to get you to do the same!!

I just wrote a letter to ABC prezzaman (president) Stephen McPherson. I've said it before and will say it again: please do the same. Or at least contact ABC via the website with your appeal. It doesn't matter if you can't coherently string your thoughts together, the aim is not to sound intelligent, just passionate.

Sending this letter is going to be a proper bitch for me, and will cost as much as a tub of Ben & Jerry's to send this from London to America, but I'll do it anyway because I love Scrubs. And I think you do too, and airmail costs are worth it!!

Anyway, here's the letter. It's not great:

Stephen McPherson,
President, ABC Entertainment
ABC, Inc.
500 S. Buena Vista Street
Burbank, CA 91521-4551

Dear Mr McPherson,

I write to you as a fifteen year-old girl living in London, with a wish shared by millions. That wish is for your network’s long-running comedy, Scrubs to continue. It has lasted eight years incredibly successfully, with a fairly constant level of ratings keeping it afloat. However, this year, as I know you know, there has been quite a significant dip. I understand fully the message this sends to your network: the show’s fan base has dwindled, and it clearly does not have the same appeal it once had.

Perhaps this is true. I can’t deny the ratings, but I can try and justify them to you. As someone who has been watching this season, and its predecessors, on the Internet (fear not, I still watch it when it enters British screens and always buy the DVD box sets, plus much other merchandise, so am not costing your company anything), I can see there has been a significant change in the show’s dynamics. What, I think, many of the viewers don’t realise, is that this change is on purpose. Most Scrubs watchers don’t read interviews with the cast and crew of the program, so they don’t realise that this entire season has been viewed as a spin-off, with the same title purely for convenience. I know in the commercials it was stated that “everything’s new- except for the title”, but many people would not have seen that, or taken it seriously.

Obviously now it is too late to change the show’s name, but I feel that now this season has improved as brilliantly as it has, and now that people are more comfortable with the idea of a new cast, it could become really successful if it continues. Even if it doesn’t, the show still has a massive ‘cult’ fan base. I for one can honestly, if slightly ashamedly, admit that Scrubs is my life. I genuinely don’t know what I would do without it. The writing is consistently sharp and funny, the cast are so talented, charismatic and charming; and the whole premise of the show and the storylines are ones that never get old or become tedious, which is why they are constantly borrowed by other television programs. Scrubs really is not ready to finish. And I’m not ready to let it.

That is why I have joined an Internet campaign called Save Our Scrubs (SOS), and started a blog in support of the cause (http://www.saveourscrubs.blogspot.com/). There are thousands of people behind SOS, all campaigning to save our mutual love. So please, Mr McPherson, make this all worthwhile and continue Scrubs, even if it is just to see how it fares. If any show deserves a tenth season, it’s this one.

Yours sincerely,

Tushara Rose

Ben and Jerry want you to send a letter.

A petition, and some word from Bill about what he thinks.

An interview with Bill. He identifies all the mistakes he may have made at the beginning of this season, and takes a realistic view on what may happen. He says there's a 30% chance of continuation... damn.
If you're still sceptical about the new season, this is the interview to read!

This guy is also called Bill Lawrence. I think it's the bearded one.....

A petition has also been made for SOS. It would be worthwhile to sign it, though it's not really a very big one.

Also, Wednesday is the day to tweet #saveourscrubs!! If you see it trending, screencap that baby!! But remember: make sure your #saveourscrubs posts are not of such a level that twitter classifies you as spam!

Scrubs campaign song...

Ok, well this is a bit of a joke, trying to add a bit of fun to a dire situation.
I suggest this is the official SOS campaign song. The lyrics work pretty well, hehe. :D

Just to say that now that Stephen McPherson has shown he still has an interest in continuing Scrubs, we must send him letters to show that we, as a fanbase, have not lost faith in the show. I'm trying to arrange for there to be a mad twitter SOS session on Wednesday, where we all post #saveourscrubs like mad in an attempt to make it a trending topic. The more commotion we make, the more we will be listened to. :D

if anyone has any news or information about the SOS campaign that isn't on this blog, please contact me via twitter at @SheilaTushtush, or, if you are a member of either FanForum of Fanpop, via personal message to tushtush. Thanks.

A tiny ray of hope from Stephen McPherson

Steve McPherson, president of ABC, has said that there is a tiny possibility that Scrubs may return nest year (here: http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/01/12/abcs-mcpherson-loves-ugly-betty-but-loves-scrubs-better-off-ted-too/38578), though it looks as though we'll be competing with Better Off Ted.

This is why it is imperative that we continue this campaign, as it may actually work! There is no room to be sceptical. Fight, ma peepies (they know you mean peeps, just change the subject...), we could actually win this. It seems sending letters to ABC is the best way to get through!!

McPherson also has said this:
"I love both those shows [Scrubs and Better Off Ted]. Scrubs did an amazing job of taking the show into another year. Hope there's potential for growth, but numbers weren't there. Intent not to burn them off. We'll make a decision when those shows stop airing."

An SOS youtube video

Just some encouragement in video form. Made by iNewbieJD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSy9uwWo1X0&feature=sub
:D

Things we could do.

Here's a collection of ideas that people have had to draw attention to this campaign:
-On one particular agreed day and time, post many tweets on twitter with the tag #saveourscrubs, in an attempt to make it trend.
-Send letters and emails to ABC, pleading for the show to continue.
-Create fan arts and icons and circulate them.
-In your letters include a small petition, with people on it from your work/school, not because the numbers will be enough, but to show that so many ordinary people everywhere care about the show.
-Try and get cast and crew on board with the campaign.

If you have any ideas please comment, or add them to any of the websites listed in the previous post. Any ideas help, from eating ABC studios until they agree to renew Scrubs to flashmobs. Hopefully it will all be worth it in the end!!

An introduction to Save Our Scrubs.

An appeal has recently started (originally by http://ihatedrcox.com) across the internet to save Scrubs. As you may know, ABC haven't ordered the back nine for this season and it looks pretty much like season 10 is not going to happen.

This is awful. Yes, Scrubs was complete after season eight, but this new stuff not really Scrubs, this is a spin-off. We have supported this new season, we have become invested in the characters and we want to see what happens. There is no finale, so the show will just finish.

Unless we stand together to save Scrubs on this SOS campaign, we will all die in a pool of sadness with no closure. So, do what you can! Advertise on Myspace, facebook, twitter, fansites and forums to SOS. Because we need this.

Anne Sweeney
President, ABC Television Network

ABC are also contactable via the website by US citizens, though there is a tiny word limit: http://abc.go.com/site/contact-us

This blog will be posting up on new things you can do to support SOS, and will also track the progress of the campaign. Let's do it, kiddywinkles!!!
